Home Gardening Tips for the Win

Gardening is a great way to get outside and enjoy the beautiful spring and summer weather. It’s an especially satisfying and rewarding hobby if you grow your own vegetables — no more trips to the produce section of the grocery store! Gardening is also just plain fun and can add that beautiful touch to your yard that you’ve been looking for. Whether you’re a veteran gardener or you still can’t tell the difference between a rose and tulip, everyone could use a few cool tips and tricks to make gardening easier for all, and even more fun. Here are our coolest tips and tricks that everyone from beginners to advanced gardeners can use in their home gardens.

1). Tomatoes are one of the most popular vegetables for people to plant in their home gardens. They are very easy to take care of and provide the gardener with a delicious and healthy snack once ripened. Tomatoes grown in a home garden just taste better than those bought from the supermarket, but there is a simple trick to make them taste even sweeter and juicier. Try sprinkling baking soda around the soil near your tomato plants. Baking soda is basic and tomatoes are acidic. The basic nature of the baking soda will counteract the acidic nature of the tomato which will yield a much sweeter tomato! Check out this awesome article for even more tomato growing tips!

2). Baking soda isn’t the only thing you can add to your soil for healthier plants. Next time you make eggs for breakfast remember to save the eggshells! Crush them up and spread them around the soil near your plants. The eggshells provide much needed calcium for the plants and can also deter certain insects away from your plants. Many different beetles and slugs can be kept away using this simple method.

3). Make a water bottle reservoir from on old plastic bottle. This is an ingenious trick for watering the roots of your plants on hot summer days. Take a plastic bottle and cut off the bottom using a knife. Partially fill your pot with soil and then place the bottle upside down with the cap taken off inside the pot. Fill the rest of the pot with soil until the bottle can stand on its own. Plant your plants in a ring around the plastic water bottle. Fill the bottle with water on a hot summer day and the water will slowly seep out of the bottom of the bottle, directly nourishing your plant’s roots! 4). Make use of the pot-in-pot method. This trick is an easy way to relieve you of the physical labor of re-planting and repotting when the seasons change. All you have to do is dig a hole for an empty plastic pot. Place the empty pot in the hole which will act as a placeholder for future pots. Then just place your plant in its own pot within the pot in the ground. This way you can easily change out seasonal plants without any hassle!

5). Make use of epsom salt in your garden. Epsom salt has high concentrations of magnesium and sulfate, both of which are extremely beneficial to plant life. All you have to do is sprinkle it onto the soil around your plants! You can also add it to the water used for your plants. Just a few tablespoons will do the trick and have your plants looking healthier than ever!

Following these simple five tips and tricks will leave your garden looking more beautiful and growing even healthier. So what are you waiting for, get out there and start gardening!
